Chattanooga Bowfishing At It's Best!

Chattanooga bowfishing was totally unheard of to me until a few years ago.

Why? I had just never heard of such a "strange" sport. At least it seemed strange to me then.

Family Bowfishing Tips Begin

The next thing I new my brother was going bowfishing with my uncle, who is a Chattanooga area taxidermist and avid sportsman.

Before I knew it, I was seeing my brother featured in the Sports section of the Chattanooga Times Free Press holding some of the "giant" fish that he had speared while bowfishing nearby.

Needless to say, this peeked my interest, so I began asking questions from time to time when I was around my brother.

One day, I even stopped by his house to see his new custom boat rig. You talk about cool! That thing is awesome!

This is my brother's bowfishing boat. What a rig eh?

It even has a custom "fan motor" set up so that he can get to those very shallow spots where no trolling motor will take you without having to constantly fight "the battle of the tangle weed"!

Family Bowfishing Tips Turn Into Bowfishing Trips

Sometime during that period, my nephew had taken a big interest in the sport to the point that he actually started a website about it and even organized a local bowfishing tournament, which will take place at Lake Chickamauga on August 25th and 26th of this year (2007).

He also bought his own boat...

And if that wasn't enough, the passion that my brother and nephew have for this sport has led them to begin offering guided bowfishing trips in and around the Chattanooga area!

A Few Chattanooga Bowfishing Facts

  • Bowfishing keeps "trash" fish under control, so that they do not destroy game fish habitats.

  • You do have to have a license to bowfish, but most states only require a standard fishing license for it.

  • The most common fish to shoot in our area are Common Carp, Grass Carp, Buffalo, Gar and Catfish. These are determined and regulated by the state in which you are shooting. Be sure you are up to date on the state laws in each state you shoot in.

  • The fish that are shot during most tournaments are taken to processing plants that make pet food, ladies makeup, and other "useful" products.
