The Chattanooga Incline Railway is Called
|
|||||
The Incline Railway and its two stations are reminiscent of the historical Civil War days in Chattanooga. The rail cars now have a trolley style and lots of brass and do a great job of recreating the nostalgia of days gone by as they travel up and down Lookout Mountain.
But, it's the view...Yes that magnificent view of the Tennessee valley that really makes the incline such a popular attraction around here.
The Chattanooga Incline Railway climbs up an astounding 72.7% grade from St. Elmo Station almost a mile to Lookout Mountain Station. The railway is the steepest passenger railway in the world!
Once there, you'll probably want to stay on top of the mountain for a while to take in the wonderful views from the observation deck, or enjoy snacks and purchase souvenirs at the station.You may also want to take the short walk to Point Park. There you can enjoy learning the history of the Civil War "Battle Above the Clouds" or take in even more of the breathtaking views from the point where General Grant enjoyed gazing across the Tennessee valley.
There are also several historic houses atop the mountain that are of interest to many. The period architecture is beautiful.
Then get one more great look at the scenic city as you board the Chattanooga TN Incline Railway for your steep descent down Lookout Mountain.
The Incline Railway in Chattanooga is open year-round but has varying hours of operation. You should call ahead or visit their website before you visit to make sure you plan adequately.
